EPOCA - SPRING 2018
STUDIO IN FLORENCE, ITALY
[Chipboard ; X-Board ; Acetate ; Stick ; Rhinoceros ; Adobe Illustrator]
"Epoca," meaning "Eras" in Italian, seeks to reinstate the historical and cultural significance that has been lost over time in Piazza Brunelleschi. Located just a few blocks from the Duomo, the site boasts three buildings that each speak of a different time period in Florence's history:
University of Florence's Humanities Department: originally home to the monastery of Santa Maria Degli Angeli. The monastery and its complex was a cultural hub of Florence in the past, as well as a center for scholarship.
The Michelucci building: one of the first (and only) "modern" buildings in Florence. Designed and built by a native Florence architect, Michelucci played an important role in other modern buildings across the city.
Rotunda Brunelleschi: designed and built by the Filippo Brunelleschi - the same man who designed the iconic dome of Santa Maria del Fiore. The Rotunda's original design/appearance was lost in translation, but scholars have a pretty good idea of what it is supposed to look like. Part of my project involves restoring this monument to its originally intended glory.
The form of the addition "points" at the Rotunda and Michelucci building while anchoring itself to the University building. It seeks to educate the community on Brunelleschi's importance, promote student voices, and restore the historical significance and respect to the site.
