To touch or stroke gently or lovingly
A gentle or loving touch
Intimacy is founded in our sense of touch; the simple gesture of a caress has the ability soothe, to comfort, and to strengthen the bond between two individuals. It is soft, gentle, and loving, and provides warmth and a feeling of togetherness that is undeniable.
Unlike many additions that appear to be “tacked” onto the side of the existing building, Caress seeks to recreate the intimate action that it is named after - in architectural form. The addition is comprised of two forms that gently fold over/under one another to meet the existing Cube House. The new forms bend around the house, folding up along the exterior walls where they meet them - creating a soft interaction between the two. This action does not change the overall structure or appearance of the original Cube House; instead it illustrates how two very different forms can interact peacefully and meaningfully.
The addition’s interior becomes an extension of the lower floor of the Cube House, changing the way the existing building functions. The folding of Caress creates a series of intimate spaces that serve its residents’ needs while also creating new areas where people can gather and connect. These shared spaces are perhaps the most important elements, which is clear by making these larger and more prominent than the private areas (in this case, the bedrooms and bathrooms).
Overall, Caress seeks to create a soft, meaningful interaction with the existing building while also promoting “togetherness” in its formal configuration.
